Timothy Leary Interviews Billy Idol :: CYBERPUNK

Timothy Leary interviews Billy Idol on ABC In Concert from 1993 as part of promoting Idol's Cyberpunk album. Timothy Leary and Billy Idol see "cyber" as a way for people to know significantly more about how the world works, and then later subvert oppression.

Billy Idol discusses a small amount of the technology behind the Cyberpunk album. He notes about how it was completely produced on a computer. Timothy Leary sees Billy as "Creating his own reality."

Also included in the video below are The Ramones and Television and Joey Ramone is the moderator.

WATCH or DOWNLOAD it here (via archive.org) 23 min video off tape, it's a little screwed up, probably watched too much before they ripped it. Also the commercials are dead air.

Sun Ra: Brother From Another Planet

Full documentary from the BBC4

Sun Ra was born on the planet Saturn some time ago. The best accounts agree that he emerged on Earth as Herman Blount, born in Birmingham, Alabama in 1914, although Sun Ra himself always denied that Blount was his surname. He returned to Saturn in 1993 after creating a stunningly variegated and beautiful assemblage of earthly and interplanetary music, most notably with his fervently loyal Arkestra.

Sun Ra and his Arkestra were the subject of a few documentary films, notably Robert Mugge's 'A Joyful Noise' (1980), which interspersed performances and rehearsals with Sun Ra's commentary on various subjects ranging from today's youth to his own place in the cosmos.

Today's documentary, Don Letts' 'Sun Ra, Brother From Another Planet' from 2005, reuses some of Mugge's material and includes some additional interviews.

TV on the Radio: Nine Types Of Light (movie)

"Nine Types of Light by TV on the Radio is as much an album as it is a movie," states their website. "The movie is meant to be a visual re-imagining of the record, and includes a music video for every song on the album. TV on the Radio personally asked their friends and the filmmakers to help direct the music videos.

"Tunde Adebimpe, the director for the full Nine Types of Light movie, storybooked the music videos together with interviews from local New Yorkers on various topics, including dreams, love, fame and the future. Tunde also directed the music video for Forgotten."

Zs

Zs was founded in 2000 and is Sam Hillmer (tenor saxophone), Ben Greenberg (electric guitar), Tony Lowe (electric guitar), and Ian Antonio (drum set). While Zs' music has been variously categorized as no-wave, noise, and post-minimalist, it is primarily concerned with making music that challenges the physical and mental limitations of both performer and listener. Manipulating extended technique, unique instrumental synthesis, and near telepathic communication, Zs aims to create works that envelop the listener and unfold sonically over time, evoking unspoken past, present, and future rites and ritual. Zs live session recorded Wednesday March 17 2010, in a backyard in Austin, TX

Walking On Eggshells: Borrowing Culture in the Remix Age

"Walking on Eggshells" is a 24-minute documentary about appropriation, creative influence, re-use and intellectual property in the remix age. It is a conversation among various musicians, visual artists, writers and lawyers, all sharing their views on why and how we use and create culture, and how intellectual property law, originally designed to provide people with incentives to create, sometimes hinders creative production far more than it enhances it.

This film is our final project for the seminar "Intellectual Property in the Digital Age" at Yale University.

Jym Davis - White Space

White Space was created as a variation on the theme of Creation. The work uses the Creation story of Adam as a guide ("formed man from the dust of the ground"). A human head appears as animated 'dust' as it emerges from and descends into a chalky white pool. While the non-narrative short film can viewed as the original "man" being created by God, there are also references to science-fiction and the head takes on a ghostly ethereal quality...like an alien being from another planet. Influences of David Lynch as well as the repetitious music of minimalist composers Philip Glass and Steve Reich can also be seen. In addition to directing the video, Jym Davis also appears in the work.
